How Do Warrant Bail Bonds Work in Ohio?

Initial Arrest and Bail: After being arrested, a person may choose to post bail in order to be freed from custody until their court date. Bail is a financial guarantee that the defendant will appear in court as planned.
Court Appearance: The defendant is required to appear in court on a designated date and time. A key step in the judicial process, skipping this appearance might have major repercussions.
Failure to Appear: The judge may issue a bench warrant if the defendant fails to appear for their court appearance. A bench warrant is an order that gives law enforcement the go-ahead to detain the subject and transport them to court.
Warrant Bail Bond: The defendant or someone acting on their behalf (such as a bail bondsman) may post a warrant bail bond to resolve the matter and prevent arrest. This bond acts as a pledge that the defendant will show up in court at a later date and effectively stands in for them.
Court Appearance: Once the warrant bail bond is posted, the defendant is normally freed from detention. The defendant must show up in court on the new day to present their case.
Bond Forfeiture: If the defendant fails to appear in court again, the court may forfeit the bail bond. A new arrest warrant might be issued and the cash or property used to secure the bond could be forfeited to the court.
